Hang up the saddle
Wipe the dust off your boots,
there's nothing to gain here
And everything to lose.
The wandering wild horses
Have all been tied up and tamed,
And only tumbleweeds
Roll through town down main
Oh what has become
Of my wild western world?
The dust never settled
Now it barely even stirs
The shadows still dance
In deserted saloons
And the canyons still echo
Guns shot at high noon
They fenced off the cattle
Sent our cowboys off to war
They drank up the gold
And sold the soil we wouldn't sow.
The railcars shake the shingles
Off the shacks we sheltered in
And the bands of coyotes
Have silenced their howling
Oh what has become
Of my wild western world?
The dust never settled
Now it barely even stirs
The shadows still dance
In deserted saloons
And the canyons still echo
Guns shot at high noon
The deer and antelope don’t play anymore
The buffalo have gone to walk a celestial shore
We stripped the people of their bows and their braids
Oh Lord, what have we done? And what is there to save?
Oh what has become
Of my wild western world?
The dust never settled
Now it barely even stirs
The shadows still dance
In deserted saloons
And the canyons still echo
Guns shot at high noon

Daytrips for fro-yo
Going where the wind blows
You know you can always cry around me.
Bug girl with her bagel
Taylor with her fable
Dwelling over how things used to be.
Enemies or best friends
Mother swift and dead ends
All was well until you marooned me.
But don't worry, I've been here before.
You got to see it all
Poured out on your bedroom floor.
From dancing in your kitchen
To sacred quiet endings.
You know I'll persevere
After all, I've been here.
Carefree summer of love
The boy that I dreamed of
Betrayal you kept me afloat through.
Silent Irish goodbyes
You were both my ride or dies
So how could you do this to me?
What happened to the two of us?
Staying up late and getting lost
I couldn't even tell you about the first fall of snow
Cause with the new year you let me go
But don't worry, I've been here before.
You got to see it all
Poured out on your bedroom floor.
From dancing in your kitchen
To sacred quiet endings.
You know I'll persevere
After all, I've been here.

A robin and a squirrel
A boy and a girl
To take on the world
Until it starts to unfurl
Standing so tall
High above them all
A warm and summer's waltz
So unprepared for the fall
A young winter fawn
Captured by the dawn
On the wall, she will hang
Above some random man's name
And who is she?
An unknown beauty
Shouted in secrecy
Chanting what will be will be
I used to look up to those who came before me
Until they wronged me and I tripped on my own feet
And I said I'm sorry
Kids playing in the yard
Earning all their scores
They will learn that life is hard
But for now they study the stars
How lucky are we and how lucky are they?
To be all that they can be
In this world of uncertainty

I don't know who to be
Now that he's gone
I spent my time
In his arms
Living that summer
Like a song
But now I realize
I gave him everything I had and
Let him change my mind and
Steal my heart
I should have
Seen the warning signs and
Read between the lines
But it's too late and now I'm
Running in circles trying to
Reclaim the girl I used to know,
I used to know
But now she's gone.
She's lost in a town just up the road
And I don't know when she's coming back
Or if she will or if she won't
I don't know what to do
Now that she's gone
I used to write,
Read and sing
Before I dreamt of
Wedding rings
But now I realize
I was a temporary thing
Just someone to
Bind his time, not make him mine
I should have known the flashing lights
Would fade into the night
But it's too late and now I'm
Running in circles trying to
Reclaim the girl I used to know,
I used to know
But now she's gone.
She's lost in a town just up the road
And I don't know when she's coming back
Or if she will or if she won't
Maybe there is light at the end
Maybe these are wounds that will mend
And maybe, maybe I'll be alright
And I will see what it all was for
But til then I'm
Running in circles trying to
Reclaim the girl I used to know,
I used to know
But now she's gone.
She's lost in a town just up the road
And I don't know when she's coming back
Or if she will or if she won't
She's going seventy-five
Down a highway of possibility
And though lies, she knows she's stronger
Than she's ever been before

I believed in the tooth fairy until I was thirteen
And I still wish on dying stars
Though I’m in my twenties
And I believe that a one true love
Will sweep me off my feet
So foolish, dumb and quite naive
I know, isn't it sweet?
Like a snake in a boot swaying to your flute
I was drawn in by your charm
And magic carpet promises
Made at the break of dawn
So I believed you’re my one true love
And blindly went along
Though I’m the girlfriend in the wings
As your teenage choir sings
But will you say you were a one man band
Out playing at the grandstand
With crickets crying in your ear?
Act like you are the chosen one
And I was only fun
For the summer and seven years?
Well years roll on with the changing tide
But I’ll still be your bride
Though you go prowling in the night
And paint me stormy skies
I believe in the man you are,
Well the one that you could be
So I sit silent patiently
Wearing your invisible ring
But will you say you were a one man band
Out playing at the grandstand
With crickets crying in your ear?
Act like you are the chosen one
And I was only fun
For the summer and seven years?
And when you are a great big star
Will you kick me to the front yard
And leave me without a ring?
Find another ingénue
Someone who isn't ran through
And played wife until you got bored?
Well I was right for once in my life
And you have up and fled
There is no wedding dress to burn
Just letters left unread
So I will join Makenzie, Sandy, Cynthia and Suze
The ex-wives and girlfriends of the greats
We will never escape
Cause you say you were a one man band
Out playing at the grandstand
With crickets crying in your ear
Act like you are this chosen one
And I was only fun
For the summer and seven years
And now that you’re a great big star
You have kicked me to the back yard
And left me without a ring
You found yourself an ingénue
Someone who isn't ran through
Or played wife until you got bored
So tell me what is left for me,
Some grumpy old divorcee
Who needs a nanny for his kids?
Or do I live in mystery
So nobody can find me
Unless I want to be found?
But I’m an artist at heart too
So I’ll write a book on you
Be a bestseller, make a million bucks
So I’ll never be blue
I’ll buy a mansion in the hills
Right next to your chalet
Donate to all the charities
So I too will never fade.

I've been waiting around too long
I've been singing the same old song
In hopes maybe one won't do me wrong.
That's when you came up out of the blue
And I thought you were a dream come true
And I started wondering are you
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna, gonna
I've been learning colors and middle names
And I've listened to jokes sounding the same
As ones I heard a lifetime ago
I know, not to judge a book too soon
But I cannot be over the moon
If you, won't lend me your afternoons?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna, gonna
(×2)
You know that I've been through this before
And you should know that I'm needing more
Than just being who call when you're alone
I can't date a teenager again
And I can't seem to make you understand
Why, why I won't let you see me cry
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna
Be my man?
Are you gonna, are are you gonna, gonna

You were the sun I was the moon
I crossed galaxies to be with you
I'd come out to end of the day
But at night you would just hide away
So no one knew the bond we had
Skipping stones over lily pads
I know that I'll love again
It's just hard to lose your closest friend
The sweet smell of summer rain
Has me running back to you again
But I forgot that flowers bloomed
That was until I let go of you
And though I still see signs
saying that you should be mine
I take them as you saying hi
Though you wouldn't if you passed me by
And when I pick flowers from my diary
I don't think of how you wouldn't buy them for me
Would you be proud of her I've become
I'm no longer the girl you couldn't love
Still the sweet smell of summer rain
Has me running back to you again
But I forgot that flowers bloomed
That was until I let go of you
And though I love you still
It's never more than the life built
After waiting in the wings
Of you trying to live out your father's dreams
I'll sleep on a bed of hydrangeas
And dream of a life that I could have known
And it's sad, but I'm glad
Glad I'm on my own
Still, the sweet smell of summer rain
has me running back to you again
But I forgot the flowers bloomed
That was until I let go of you
